Once upon a time, a chinese uncle and a malay auntie sat opposite of me. They looked like they were in their late 40s early 50s. They worked for the airport security judging from their uniforms. They were there for twenty minutes and I have to say it was twenty minutes of entertainment.
*I was not eavesdropping. They were just loud* The following conversation is the best I could remember:
Uncle: Do you know, one big earthquake can destroy Singapore. All buildings will crash. What will you do? Auntie: Scary uh. I will call my love ones. Uncle: Cannot la. All communication will be gone. About 300 hundred years ago, even before the original people living here existed, there were all kinds of animals. But after one bigggg earthquake, everything destroyed. Auntie: Oh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
*they were gossiping about some colleagues* Auntie: Yeah la, We work so hard but they enjoy life. Feel like complaining. Uncle: True, but the best thing to do now is to shut you gap. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Uncle: Next week we book the Karaoke room okay? Auntie: Yeah can. I ask my friend, she can give discount. Uncle: Ok good. But not just the two of us. Or else ppl will think we having scandal. Auntie: Haha ya. We can invite ........ ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, their conversation might seem nothing to some of you. But I sure was intrigued. I should not be stereotyping all older people to have a mature personality but this couple changed me. I saw myself in them. I do not want to change. I want to be conversing with my friends the way I do now, thirty years down the road.
Maybe I am not understanding myself. Why do I even think that there would be a change?
